gogyohka

consciously choosing
my most worn out clothes
to enter the new year
as stripped
as I leave it

gogyohka seqence

a Christmas with my maternal grandmother

glass of sherry
she toasts
the picture of her husband
wishing him
a merry Christmas

his portrait
decorated
for the holidays
salutes her
back

I pick her up
to take her to
my mothers,
her daughter,
for Christmas eve

she's been ready
from early morning
sitting
in her finest dress
waiting, waiting

dropping
cheroots ashes
down her front
glaucoma on one eye
the other blinded

---*---

I took her home
and up the stairs

she would finish
Christmas eve
with a quiet moment
memories dancing
in vivid lights

the faces that
were gone ...

Gogyohka for Granddad

he let me out
into the world
with the same care
he set our toy ship sailing -
granddad

::::

granddads birthday
I salute his memory
with a decent cigar
knowing well
he would've joined in
